Moments that make you cringe a little
A personal story from my evening...
I left work at 9:30pm feeling a little ill. Nothing horrid, but something queasy in the tummy. I'd intended to go to the gym, but I didn't quite feel up to it as I walked out. I got on the subway, started to feel better, and thought I'd maybe try to get that workout in afterall. I get off at the stop near my gym. Not drastically out of the way, but not the stop I'd use otherwise. And it's not until I push back out of the turnstyle that I realize I'd left my gym bag at the office in a moment of not feeling well. Oops. Well look, I'm right in front of Urban Outfitters. Maybe I'll pop in and see if that skirt in the window would look cute on me in addition to the mannequin... you know... for kicks...
I'm listening to Heartbeats by the Knife on my pod as I
approach the store. I'm about 5 steps away as I hit pause, and start to wrap up my earbuds. I enter the store, and what's playing? Heartbeats by the Knife. Cue cringing. Actual physical cringing. Don't get me wrong, I like this song, and heck -- five years ago this type of coincidence would have made me feel cool, but tonight it just made my stomach flip all over again at the misery of my own homogeneity.
So I went home and have been listening to bluegrass have the night... I stumbled across this. I feel just a little better.

Rant: why so serious?
Hi friends of LadyFaces,
As per usual these days, my apologies for my general lack of presence. These recession times hit us all in different ways, and for me it's been an increased workload, which I won't dare complain about, given the number of laid off friends I have these days. But I ran across a blog post recently that just begged for a response, and I felt the need to bring it here.
The post, from BettyConfidential, which is, as far as I can tell, some lady-mag style blog with no specific lady-mag affiliation, took on the issue of the Jon Favreau picture. W
hat is the Jon Favreau picture, you ask? Well maybe you've seen it and maybe you haven't. It would have been way bigger news if it had come out during the primaries, but given the post-election times it's just not quite as big. Basically, the dude on the left in this picture, Jon, is an Obama speechwriter... a really young and obviously idiotic dumbass (albeit wordsmith and talented) speechwriter who got drunk, saw a Hillary Clinton cut out, and pretended to grab the boob of the obviously two-dimensional cutout while posing for a picture.
This, my friends, is a prime example of "really smart, no common sense" (which, on a side note, was my mother's favorite description for my high school friends, but that's another story). Needless to say he knew that this was a bad idea even when he was doing it. Fuck, I know better than to do something like that and I'm merely a member of the media, rather than a political opponent of the cutout in question.
But the picture alone is not what inspired me to blog. It was this post, again, on the aforementioned BettyConfidential, where the author felt the need to not only criticize the act, but then also the Clinton camp, for daring to be light-hearted about it.
The Clinton response was "Senator Clinton is pleased to learn of Jon's obvious interest in the State Department, and is currently reviewing his application."
And it is on this point that Ms. Mary Dixie Carter and I differ. I think this response by the Clinton folk is spot on. She does NO good by making a big deal of this. In fact, it is entirely in her interest to not care, because what good will come of her pitching a fit. He isn't some senior statesmen, he's a dumbass kid, and she shouldn't deign to offer him a serious response. It is for the feminists of the world to strike up in irreverent criticism, but even they shouldn't waste too much time on the subject, because men who are as stupid and piggish to demean women in this way don't deserve the time or attention of women.

Ladies, know your limits!
Never forget that overeducation leads to ugliness, premature aging, and beard growth.
Making the ladies at LadyFaces total dogs.

Sarah Palin, not Hillary, but you're supposed to think that if you're a woman.
So Senator John "called his wife a cunt" McCain finally picked a veep. Exciting! Was it Romney like everyone had been predicting? Nope! Even better. He picked a lady. Governor Sarah Palin.
- This is the second time a lady has been picked to be the vice presidential candidate. (The number one option to be number two: Geraldine "I ruined my career by saying race too much during this election" Ferraro.)
- Palin is the first female and youngest Governor of Alaska. She was 42 when she took office in 2006. She's 44 now.
- She has a fuck ton of kids (5).
- She's pro-life, which has long been considered to be a political requirement of anyone McCain picks.
- She's a former beauty queen!
Okay, so let's get the obvious out of the way. John McCain picked this lady because she's a woman. And because despite a week of trying to make all the dems love each other again, there are still some PUMAs lurking around and he thinks the best way of catching them is to throw a woman at them. It might work for some, but it won't work for all of them. Because the people who love Hillary love HILLARY. They don't just love her because she's a woman, they love her because they've known her for 16 years. Palin seems cool enough, she's pursued ethics reform, but she's not Hillary Clinton.
Verdict: It won't get McCain the overwhelming number of women votes he's hoping it'll get him, unless this woman turns out to be stupendous on the stump. We'll see.
But if she fails to push him over the edge, we all know what he'll call her...
