I'd Like to See Gatsby's Party Supplies

I love the Johnson County Library in Kansas City so much for this. Instead of just having normal delivery trucks, they decided to get a fleet of fake literary business trucks. That's right--get your books delivered by Kafka's Pest Control and Captain Ahab's Fine Seafood.
From librarian Donna Lauffer.
“On first seeing the trucks, people may think oh, what a clever name for a business,” she stated. “Then catching the tag line ‘Available at Johnson County Library’ will definitely get them thinking more about the message and what the library has to offer. We think the campaign will be fun and interesting for the public, especially those who have read the books and are familiar with the characters and authors. Often we promote all the services and resources the library to offer such as online databases, career assistance, and home work help. We tend to overlook why most people come to the library: to find something good to read.”
I hope this works! Creative librarians rock my socks.

Coming Soon to a Theater Near You
Trailers sure were different back in the day. Check out this one for Psycho. Alfred Hitchcock takes the viewer on a little tour of the Bates' motel and home. The music is so weirdly cheerful, and Hitchcock alludes to creepy things but never goes very far, at least until the end.
Also check out the rest of IFC's Top 50 Trailers. There's totally an art to the trailer, and these people get it. (And yay for Monday time wasters!)

Kind of Makes You Want to Order Right Now

Pizza Hut is trying to update its image. Now it's going by "The Hut" (like that sounds a lot better) and has a new design for its box. On the inside lip of the box is a new slogan: "Now You're Eating."
Seriously, guys? Did you want to make your pizza sound as average and unappealing as could be? Okay, I get the idea--Pizza Hut lets you fully appreciate the joy of eating. But "Now You're Eating" just makes me think of other options they could have considered:
- "You Will Probably Digest This."
- "We Guess It's Food!"
- "Good Thing You're Hungry."
- "No Refunds."

I Had the Time of My Life
During these hard times, you need to make your ads stand out. Make it personal. Make it local. Old Rich People take on this issue.
And it's still less awkward than this local ad.

Shuffle of the Penguins
Check out the cute ad for public transportation.
I can't tell you how many times a T car full of people has battled a killer whale.

Loveseat
Furniture--the one thing that can bring the races together.
At first I thought it was going to be like that Human Giant sketch. But somehow the Red House guys have outdone Human Giant in ridiculousness.
This is why you really need to pay for a marketing department, guys.

Angst Your Sparkle Off

Oh my lord--the brooding stare, the clenched fists, the jacket-sans-shirt. Edward is in pain!
And it's hysterical.
Watch out, preteen girls. Your major angst is coming!

Sunny Monday
This commercial is proof that Zooey Deschanel can do no wrong. Usually I'm not a fan of the cotton commercials, but Zooey makes me want to wear a cotton dress and play a musical instrument.
Forget the fabric of our lives. Zooey is the coolest girl of our lives!

Like Hundreds of Balloons in Your Mouth
Aeros aren't my favorite foreign candy, but this commercial is fun.
I get that the idea is they're brown because it's a chocolate bar, but I'd like to skateboard through a bunch of blue balloons. It would be like skating through water!

Get on This, Marketing
I love movie trailers and posters. They offer so much promise to a potentially sucky movie. But I love them even more when people mess with them. Enter Movie Poster Honesty. A few favorites:

Superbowl recap.
What a night for television it turned out to be. Like anyone else not living in Pittsburgh or Arizona, I really wasn't all that excited for the match up. You had a dynasty of a team vs. a no-name. No one was really expecting the Cardinals to give the Steelers a run for their money, but they did, and they made it a good game.
But as a TV girl what do I care about? How good the TV was. There were some fun moments, the Boss Crotch (watch this video at 3:37 to see what I'm talking about), the Alec Baldwin Hulu commercial -- heck, I even enjoyed most of the complete nonstop plugging of NBC Monday night. But the weirdest part, for me, was the use of an SNL skit as a commercial. That's what I'm talking about Pepsuber.
Now, if it had just been the commercial that would have been one thing. A bit of a sell out move but nothing too unexpected when NBC and the rest of television networks are looking for almost anyway to make a buck these days. But this wasn't just a commercial based on a running gag on the show. This actually aired last night during the episode of SNL. I noticed it at the time, but somehow seeing the exact same skit airing during a commercial break as opposed to during the show freaked me out even more. You gotta wonder if Pepsi just paid for the plug on the show, or if they also had to pay for the air time, because you know they had to pay for it one way or another to have it on tonight.
But that must just be our new world of advertising. Everyone has DVR now, so even during a sports event, one of the few sports events that almost everyone will watch live (and therefore not necessarily skip the commercials) companies are looking for ways to integrate their advertising into content. I've got mixed feelings about this issue, but I'm not gonna say it's either all good or all bad. Yes, commercialization can be a slippery slope, but if people can be entertained and companies can market their products, is that really the end of the world? Who's to say.
Anyway -- to take it to the readers -- what was your favorite superbowl ad this year? If you missed it you can check it out here.

As Long As It's Not the Island on Lost, I'm There

Looking for a job? With graduation approaching, I'm seriously considering applying to this one, called "the best job in the world." Basically, you get to hang out on a tropical island. For money. They Australian government will pay you to be on vacation all the time.
"Wait a minute," you say. "There's got to be a catch. Is it Leper Island? Are there land sharks?"
Maybe. But I'm willing to take that chance. All you have to do all day is take walks on the island, snorkel, and take care of a few minor tasks, and blog about your experience. In exchange, you get to stay rent-free in a three-bedroom beach home complete with plunge pool and golf buggy.
Oh, and they're going to pay you 150,000 Australian dollars (105,000 US dollars).
The idea is that this will help Australian's tourist industry, which has taken a hit recently because of the economy. The island caretaker will hopefully write about how freakin' awesome it is to live on a beautiful island, so other people will say, "Hey, Australia sounds pretty amazing. Let's go!"
What do you need on your resume for this job? You need to be a good swimmer and an excellent communicator who can speak and write English.
I haven't gone swimming in a little while, but I don't suck at it. And hopefully I don't suck at the English thing. Sign me up!
Acting state Premier Paul Lucas said,"This is a legitimate job which is open to anyone and everyone."
Applications are open until February 22. Eleven shortlisted candidates will be flown to Hamilton Island in early May for the final selection process and the six month contract will commence on July 1.

The Taste of Heartlessness

The people at Burger King have some interesting ideas lately. Not only do they want you to smell like your food, but they also want you to sacrifice your friends in the name of hamburgers.
If you de-friend 10 people on Facebook via the Whopper Sacrifice application, you get a free Whopper. Unlike normal de-friending, this will also notify your sacrificed friends (now enemies?) so they'll get on board, too.
A little heartless? Sure. But what a great idea. Any company can make a Facebook group or invite you to an event or make an application in which you can send people little hamburger icons. It's a nice change to see something a little more underhanded.
I'm not sure if it would be better to de-friend those people you don't really care about (hey guy from that discussion section four years ago!) or people you're actually friends with, who would get the joke and whom you could re-friend after you get your free lunch.
Eat heartily, hamburger lovers. You may not have friends, but you sure do have five minutes of happiness.

You Pick the Color, We've Got the Carpet!
Because it's Human Giant day here at Lady Faces, here's Carpet Monkey.
And it totally looks like a carpet commercial. I love Aziz's face!

Hitler Wants Your Babies

And we think it's annoying to have cans of Pepsi blatantly in a movie? It looks like old-time ad execs were even more heavy-handed. But at least now I know that the monster that's hiding in my closet is really Hitler. (Not exactly Monsters, Inc., right?)
Check out all the creepy old-fashioned ads. You'll be glad you're living in these modern times, even if our economy is crumbling. At least Santa isn't going to get lung cancer!

How Much is the Giant White Out?
While advertising is all around us, it's also really easy to ignore. Sometimes you run across a commercial that grabs your attention (the Snickers "I'm Batman, anyone?), but mostly they all seem the same, year after year. But sometimes advertisers do a little something extra.
(True?)
(I assume that's a car they bought and painted over. But even if it's not, how are you gonna argue? The Bride has some serious issues and can kick your ass.)
(It wouldn't be nearly as good if it were just plopped on the sidewalk somewhere.)
