Music to My Ears

Possibly the most endearing piano duet in the world. They've been a couple for more than 60 years!

Play it again, Sam!

My Heart Will Go On

No matter how many Oscars they're nominated for, Kate and Leo will never get away from the megahit Titanic. Especially when survivors are around.

At least, one survivor. Millvina Dean, the last remaining Titanic survivor, who was only nine weeks old at the time of the sinking and is now 98, was having trouble paying her nursing home bills. Photographer Don Mullan, who had taken pictures of Dean, appealed to the Titanic stars and director James Cameron to help with Millvina's bills. Mullan was selling a limited-edition photograph of Millvina's hands in order to raise money for the Titanic survivor. He told the Independent:

"I figured that if the edition sold out, it would secure Millvina for a full year. My plan, however, was to double the impact and thereby secure her for two years. I decided, therefore, at the opening of the exhibition, to publicly challenge James Cameron, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, 20th Century Fox and Celine to match me dollar for dollar."

A little pressure-y, but the Titanic stars and director have contributed to the Millvina campaign. And well done to them. After making an insane amount of money and getting super famous off the movie, it's nice that they feel a sense of obligation to the people (er, person) who survived the sinking.

Plus, I freakin' loved that movie in seventh grade.

Geriatrics Rejoice!

People think it's hard to have fun when you're old. You need to get to bed earlier, you have hip replacements, you have hearing aids, your grandchildren are kind of lame. It's a lot of problems!

But old people can surprise you. Sometimes they have a lot of fun! Evidenced by photos of old people enjoying themselves.

A few favorites:

The Internet Grandma

Forget Kit. My new favorite Depression-era girl is Clara, now 93 and a Youtube sensation. Sharing simple recipes from a difficult time along with her family memories, Clara is a lovely addition to the internet. It's like always having a grandma around. Plus, she's a first-generation child of Sicilian parents. Hurray for Italian girls!

Some fun facts about Clara:

  • Born August 18, 1915 Chicago, Il
  • Daughter of Joe and Josephine Bonfanti (from Sicily
  • Worked for Hostess filling Twinkies (@1935)
  • Married Dino Cannucciari (opera singer) in Rome, Italy 1948
  • Had 1 son, Carl, 1950
  • Has 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren

Mostly, I love when Clara talks about growing up, and her own history. Usually, memories like these are lost. Even if grandparents share them with their grandchildren, only the grandchildren know. Now we get to hear a little bit about what life was like for Clara. (I love when she shares pictures!)

Check out her website, Great Depression Cooking. You can even buy her episodes on DVD!

Do It For Charles

If Obama doesn't win, Charles might die. Vote wisely.

This kills me. You rock, Charles!

Little old ladies

Proving they don't fit that stereotype of little old white ladies who are scared of big menacing black men.

With rhymes!

Clowning Around

By now you're probably heard that The Dark Knight is the biggest movie ever*. Time gives these reasons for its domination at the box office:

  • Heath Ledger's performance (and untimely death)
  • Good marketing/hype
  • Great reviews
I second that. The Marketing team did a great job and came up with some creative hype-builders, such as Gotham Times papers and 'I Believe in Harvey Dent' buttons. Ledger's performance was amazing (part way through I had to remind myself this was the guy from Brokeback Mountain and not just a crazy man). Not only were hardcore fans willing to shell out $10 (or more), but people who might have not been interested otherwise were swayed by good reviews. That all makes sense.

However, Time neglects to mention the "untargeted" audience. That's right.

Grandparents.

My friend's grandmother went to see The Dark Knight against my friend's warnings. You won't like it, she claimed. It's really not for you. But Grandma surprised. This is her review:

"That Joker fellow was having a grand ol' time. He would kill people and then he would just laugh and laugh. It was a terrific film. Anyway, sorry to cut this conversation short but I have to get back to Masterpiece Theater."

Sure, we all knew fanboys would go see Batman. But what the studios didn't expect was the grandma quotient.

Great job, Grandma!
