Reject!

Oh Sarah Palin. We certainly had fun with you during the election. But don't worry, we haven't forgotten you now that you're back in Alaska. There's so much fun to be had with local government!

For example, Palin and the Juneau Democrats are trying to pick someone to fill a vacant senate seat. The Democrats submit names for Palin's approval. Except she doesn't seem to understand that you can't just put whoever you want in the seat instead. It's been a fun game of "Democrats submit a name, Palin rejects and submit her own name, Democrats reject her back." See it in action:

"Then, the Democratic Senators submitted another list. This time there were three names on it. And the governor chose a name that was not on that list - Joe Nelson. Now, the Dems were really starting to get irked. Had the governor completely lost her mind? This was a matter of principle. She was supposed to choose from a list of names they submitted, not make up the rules as she went along just because she didn’t get her way."

Can you imagine if this woman had made it to the White House? Thank God Joe Biden reminded her about what the vice president's job actually was.

I hope by the time the next election comes around, people will see that this woman doesn't care about how governments are actually run. And that does not make her a maverick.

The Break-Up

It's like when you see this one couple at parties and think, "Wow, they get along so well. How adorable. We should double with them!" But then a few months later they break up and you realize that he was cold and she was controlling and he hated puppies and she ate babies. I'm guessing that's how the GOP feels right now. Because even though Sarah Palin initially energized the campaign and connected with young Republican voters, apparently there was trouble in paradise underneath all of that smiling and waving.

The New York Times dishes up the dirt on conflicts in the McCain/Palin camp. Some claim that Palin didn't accept preparation for the Katie Couric interview, while her people say she just didn't have time with all that was in her schedule. Apparently that whole wardrobe spending spree was a surprise to them, too. And they really didn't like that Palin was thinking about running in the future.

My favorite moment:

"As late as Tuesday night, a McCain adviser said, Ms. Palin was pushing to deliver her own speech just before Mr. McCain’s concession speech, even though vice-presidential nominees do not traditionally speak on election night. But Ms. Palin met up with Mr. McCain with text in hand. She was told no by Mark Salter, one of Mr. McCain’s closest advisers, and Steve Schmidt, Mr. McCain’s top strategist."

It sounds like Palin was at a wedding and wanted to make a speech but was just some random guest, not the maid of honor.

So if there were conflicts just during these couple of months, how exactly where McCain and Palin supposed to work together in the White House? It annoys me that VPs are picked in the hopes of getting a candidate elected, not because a candidate thinks that person is the best for the job once they get it.

But I'm really curious to see how this all plays out. Fight!

Where Do Candidates Come From?

By this time next week, we'll (hopefully) have a winner in this neverending election. Whether your choice wins or loses, you can always snuggle up to him or her. That is, if you win one of these Presidential Candidate Cabbage Patch Dolls.

Okay, they're not for general sale, just for an auction, raising money for Toys for Tots. But still, it's all pretty creepy.

Scary Times

I don't want Sarah Palin to be my president. But I also think it's pretty jackass-y for people to hang a mannequin of her by a noose.

It's supposed to be a kind of "Halloween decoration." Super funny. Super clever. I don't care what views you have or what candidate you support. Behavior like that is out of line. It creates an environment of violence and fear, and is a subtle threat to vote a certain way. Democracy is about voting for whoever the hell you want to vote for. This isn't Stalinist Russia, guys.

I'm all for freedom of speech and artistic expression, but there's nothing original or artistic about this display. Nice try, jerk.

Vote for Obama. Vote for McCain. Close your eyes and pick one of the other candidates if you want. But don't create such a hostile environment for voting.

Owner of the display is Chad Michael Morrisette, official dumbass.

"Morissette does admit that if he had put up a display resembling Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama hanging from a noose, "people would've probably thrown things through our windows."

"The image of a hanged black man is a lot more intense than the image of a hanged white woman -- for our country, in the history of our country," he explained to KCAL.

Morrisette said he wants the display viewed as art that is appropriate for the holiday. "It is Halloween. It's time to be scary. Its time to be spooky," he said."

So it's okay to hang a woman but not a black person? Sure, there are more historical connotations with a lynched black person, but I don't find hanging anyone very funny or "spooky." It's just threatening.

Plus, it gives people voting Democrat a bad name. Nice job, Morrisette.

Hail to the Chief?

Sarah Palin doesn't really need to care if she and McCain win or lose. (And by this time next week, we'll know for sure.) Because she's been launched into political fame and may be on the next Republican ticket as well, only this time as president.

I know. The same woman who can see Russia from her house.

But Republicans see things a little differently:

"Ms. Palin, of Alaska, has had a rocky time since being named as Senator John McCain’s running mate, but to many conservatives her future remains bright. If Mr. McCain wins, she will give the social conservative movement a seat inside the White House. If he loses, she could emerge as a standard bearer for the movement and a potential presidential candidate in 2012, albeit one who will need to address her considerable political damage."

2012 might not be enough time to make people forget about Tina Fey's awesome impersonations. And although I'd love to see more of them, I don't want Palin in the White House as legitimately elected president in order to get that. Seriously, we don't have other good candidates? There's no other extremely qualified, likeable candidate out there?

Former Bush strategist Matthew Dowd points out:

"She’s an attractive woman who can give a great speech, but the American public doesn’t view her much beyond that. She’s vastly unpopular among moderate and independent voters, and while she could be in a position to be popular among an increasingly smaller Republican Party, she’s got to figure out a way to extend that and figure out a way to strengthen her weaknesses."

My guess is that, if McCain isn't elected, by 2012 the craze for Palin will have slowed so the public isn't clamoring for her anymore. But what if it were 2012--Palin vs. Clinton? Could we get Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on the campaign trail instead?

Another Thursday SNL

I will miss Will Ferrell's George W come January. This sketch makes me genuinely wonder though, how lame must W feel right now, given that the guy running from his party to take over his spot is not publicly bashing his policies.

Meanwhile, one more beef. These SNL Thursday updates, why the crap do they keep saying "Live from New York, It's Saturday night"? Because it's fucking Thursday night! Seriously people, the tag line is nice and all, but I think it would be okay if you actually bothered to give the real day of the week, otherwise it just feels awkward. I'm getting over the fact that you call it SNL Weekend Update Thursdays (even though Thursday is not the weekend), but don't push it, folks.

Fashion Ain't Cheap

Our favorite, Sarah Palin, has spent over $150,000 on her campaign wardrobe, provided by the Republican National Committee. I understand that candidates have to look presentable on the campaign trail--it's like going to a job interview, really--but over a hundred thousand dollars? On clothes? In the last two months?

They probably should have spent more of that money on teaching Palin the issues.

Also in the total were "a few purchases at Pacifier, a top notch baby store, and Steiniauf & Stroller Inc., suggesting $295 was spent to accommodate the littlest Palin to join the campaign trail." Only the best for baby Palin! If the baby can't hack it in his old gear, he doesn't deserve to be the First Baby!

Booth Moore, the LA Times fashion critic tries to joke about it, saying:

"Palin's clothes came from retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus and Barneys New York, and expenses included nearly $5,000 for hair and makeup. Maybe this is actually her one-woman economic stimulus plan. Lord knows the retail sector needs it."

Then they go to on to add:

"Still, voters must find it unfathomable for Palin, who has been presented as a woman “like us,” to spend that kind of money on clothes in these difficult financial times, to see her speaking so passionately about Joe the Plumber while plumbing campaign coffers for Valentino jackets and pencil skirts. And yet, they’ve eaten it up, tittering on chat sites about Palin’s Kawasaki eyeglass frames and her Naughty Monkey red peep-toe pumps."

Do I think Palin dresses well? You bet. Would I rather have a VP who dressed in clothes from Target and actually knew what she was talking about. Heck yeah! It is unfathomable for Palin to claim she's "Main Street America" and yet spends that much on her work wardrobe. I hope these voters who are swayed by fashion forget what day election day is.

I'm sure Tim Gunn would agree.

Either You're With Us Or Against Us

Apparently there's only one way to be an American.

"On MSNBC this morning, McCain adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer asserted that “real Virginia” does not include Northern Virginia:

I certainly agree that Northern Virginia has gone more Democratic. … But the rest of the state — real Virginia if you will — I think will be very responsive to Senator McCain’s message.

MSNBC host Kevin Corke gave Pfotenhauer a chance to revise her answer, telling her: “Nancy, I’m going to give you a chance to climb back off that ledge — Did you say ‘real Virginia’?”

But Pfotenhauer didn’t budge, and instead dug a deeper hole.

Real Virginia, I take to be, this part of the state that’s more Southern in nature, if you will."

As someone who holds Virginia near and dear to her heart, I find that appalling. So what are those other, "non-Southern" Virginians? Are these people who live in Virginia and work in DC? Do they count? Or people who teach at UVa? What makes a "real Virginian," Pfotenhauer? How do you even pronounce your name, anyway?

Plus:
"Palin told a crowd in North Carolina that she “loved to visit the ‘pro-America‘ areas of the country.” “No word on which states she views as unpatriotic,” wrote Juliet Eilperin."
So you have to be in line with the McCain/Palin playbook to be pro-America? Isn't part of being American having the right to disagree? Didn't our founding fathers disagree all over the place? (Thomas Jefferson vs. Alexander Hamilton, anybody?) I might get freaked out by people who have very different views than my own, but that doesn't mean they're not American. We're the freakin' melting pot, people. Let's melt.

Being from a blue state, I'm guessing I live in an "anti-America" area of the country. Thanks, Sarah.

(As for Captain America, I think he'd kick their collective ass.)

All the Mavericks in the house get your hands up

Our favorite Caribou Barbie was on SNL last night. Despite my issues with the candidate, I always thought this was the fair thing to do. She'd been spoofed pretty bad and deserved the chance to show she had a sense of humor.

This clip is from Weekend Update, and although it's more Amy Poehler's performance and the writing, it's hilarious and therefore being embedded.

But the show was one of the best I'd seen in a while for more reasons than just the Palin appearance. Even Josh Brolin impressed me. A trip to hulu to check it all out is advised for all those who missed out.

Your Worst Nightmare

When Barack Obama has a nightmare, it's this:

Yeah. It's for real. Plus some quick cuts.

Talk about early indoctrination

A man from Elizabethton, TN -- which is not far from Johnson city, TN, another town most people have never heard of -- went against his wife's wishes and named their newborn daughter Sarah McCain Palin. The obvious joke, that even your average bland AP reporters have already picked up on, is that this might not exactly help their marriage -- the headline was "Cause for divorce?..." But what bothers me more is the reasoning Mark Ciptak gave when asked why he named his daughter for the GOP candidates.

Ciptak, a blood bank employee for the American Red Cross, said he named his third child after John McCain and Sarah Palin to “to get the word out” about the campaign.

“I took one for the cause,” he said. “I can’t give a lot of financial support for the (McCain/Palin) campaign. I do have a sign up in my yard, but I can do very little.”
Really? You wanted to get the word out? Get the word out on what? Their names? Do you really think there is anyone left in America right now who doesn't already know the NAMES of the Republican nominees for President and Vice President, who's somehow gonna hear about your* kid? With reasoning like that, I'm not surprised you're voting for those two.

I feel worst for the kid though. Because if current polling trends turn out to be accurate, she'll have a hard time escaping the loser nickname in elementary school.

* edit update: I made a you're/your gaffe! this is what I get for not proofing these before I post!

One Day You're In...

It's going to be a big week for winners and losers on television. In fact, it's going to be a big day. Make that a big hour.

This week, the final presidential debate will take place on Wednesday, October 15 at 9 pm.

Also on Wednesday, October 15 at 9 pm? The finale of Project Runway, season 5.

Is it wrong that, at this point, I'd rather watch Project Runway? (Obama: Leanne :: McCain : Kenley?) Unfortunately, also Wednesday at 9, I'll be in class. Lamesville.

The accompanying picture reminds me of what McCain wanted to look like with Sarah Palin as his VP. Frankly, I'd rather have Tim Gunn as my president. (Hey, not a bad idea!)

Oh, It's Canada For Me

Hey There Delilah? Hey There Sarah Palin.

I love that they don't seem like internet fame-seekers. They seem like people who made this for their friends--and then got famous!

I'd Like to Buy a Vowell

It's a big week for Sarah Vowell here at Ladyfaces! Follow the link to a clip from her appearance on The Daily Show. (This is a double-crush for me.) She stands up for New York and calls Palin (and other Republicans) out on cheering on heroes of 9/11 but claiming that New York isn't full of real "Americans."

"If the East Coast Is American enough For Al-Qaeda, It should be American enough for them."

Sarah Vowell for Obama cabinet! Maybe she can be Historian Laureate?

All of them, any of them.

Seems like Ms. Katie Couric likes making fun of Sarah Palin too! Just like us. But that makes sense, since we're all ladies who went to UVA.

Wahoo pride, yo.

*wink*

It's running like gangbusters all over the internet already, but you'll get it here too. Because it's Palin.

They found hilarity in many of the great moments we enjoyed while liveblogging. Biden's great "John McCain has been dead wrong. I love him," moment. The Israel lovefest. Maverick Maverick Maverick. SNL has been rocking hard with their politcal coverage over the past few months. And what's even cooler: now we'll get more of it, with the new Thursday night primetime show they're starting this week: Weekend Update Thursdays! It'll be a hoot.

"OMG! You're such a good debater!"

Seriously.

Fact Checker

First of all, was I the only one who had dream-cameos by Palin and Biden?

Second, thanks for joining our first liveblogging event. We had an awesome time being snarky and talking about the issues with you. (If you missed out, check the recap!)

And speaking of checking things, here are some slightly misleading/totally false claims both candidates made. My favorites:

"PALIN: Criticized Obama's "plan to mandate health care coverage and have universal government run program" for health care, and added: "I don't think it's going to be real pleasing for Americans to consider health care being taken over by the Feds."

THE FACTS: Wrong on several counts. Obama's plan does not provide for universal coverage, only mandates insurance for children and doesn't turn the system over to the government. Most people would still get private insurance through their work. Obama proposes that the government subsidize the cost of health coverage for millions who have trouble affording it and he'd set up an exchange to negotiate prices and benefits with private insurers — with one option being a government-run plan."

"PALIN: "Two years ago, remember, it was John McCain who pushed so hard with the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac reform measures. He sounded that warning bell."

THE FACTS: Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska led an effort in 2005 to tighten regulation on the mortgage underwriters — McCain joined as a co-sponsor a year later. The legislation was never taken up by the full Senate, then under Republican control."

"BIDEN: Said McCain supports tax breaks for oil companies, and "wants to give them another $4 billion tax cut."

THE FACTS: Biden is repeating a favorite saw of the Obama campaign, and it's misleading. McCain supports a cut in income taxes for all corporations, and doesn't single out any one industry for that benefit."

Live blogging the shit show

All right folks. Here it is. The very first ladyfaces liveblog, and what a better way to kick it off than with what will hopefully be the most entertaining night of the political season. Things will get hopping around 8:30. I'll be hanging out with pals at my place in Manhattan, while Annie brings us the Bostonian perspective. Get excited.
